Description

Low Borland is a late 18th or early 19th century farm group that has been altered in the mid-19th century and again recently during its conversion to houses. It features a single-storey U-plan layout with much-altered fenestration on the steading wings. The structure is built of whitewashed rubble with ashlar margins. The original farmhouse is a single storey with an attic, located at the center of the courtyard on the west side. It has a two-window facade with a central door and an additional window inserted at the extreme left. The farmhouse has swept off-centre dormers at both the front and back.

The steading wings are of the same height and feature bracketed eaves supported by end corbels at the east gables and the south gable, though they have unfortunately been much altered. At the rear of the farmhouse, there are two wings of unequal length, one with a gabled roof and the other with a piended roof. There is also a further addition with a low-pitched roof and a central stack at the southwest corner of the group, all covered with slated roofs and low stacks.

An unusual detached threshing barn is located to the north of the steading courtyard. This barn is a single-storey and basement rectangle with a gabled roof and a concave southwest angle. It is constructed of rubble with large droved dressings and features a slit window in the south wall. The barn has a slated roof, but no machinery survives.
