Description

The Threshing Mill at West Bearford consists of late 18th to early 19th century farm buildings, with some later alterations, situated on a site that slopes to the east. The most interesting part of the complex is the range that includes a cartshed, granaries, and the threshing mill itself. The buildings are primarily constructed from variegated random rubble, with the stone dressing typically being broached and droved sandstone. The arches of the cartshed are made from local conglomerate known as clinkstone.

The cartshed and granary are located at the west end of the range and are two stories high with a symmetrical gabled design. The north elevation features four cartshed openings, while the granary above has two louvred vents. The south elevation has three louvred vents for the granary only. The west gable includes stone steps leading to a plain boarded door for the granary.

The threshing mill connects the cartshed and granary and is a single-storey structure. It has three infilled windows on the north elevation and a small piended annex on the south side. A tall chimney made of yellow brick, which is missing its cope, is also present.

The granary runs perpendicular to the rest of the range and has a two-storey north elevation with a plain attic pediment. It features a segmental arch at the ground level with a large two-leaf boarded door, a boarded opening on the first floor, and a simple oculus in the attic. The granary rises to three stories due to the sloping ground to the south and has a piended roof. There are various door and window openings of different sizes and ages, with several being infilled. Access to the top floor is provided by an arched stone ramp from the west. Single-storey piended buildings, which include partly enclosed byres, extend to the east.

The roofs are covered in red pantiles and feature a mix of piended and gabled designs with ashlar skews.

Inside, the buildings are largely disused and mainly serve as storage for redundant machinery, but there is still evidence of windowing and threshing machinery.
