Cottage 5, Farm Cottages, Eastfield

Cottage 1 at Farm Cottages in Eastfield is likely designed by William Burn around 1830. This single-storey row consists of six cottages, some of which have attics that were enhanced with additional dormers by John Farquharson of Haddington in 1876. The cottages are constructed from squared and snecked stugged red sandstone, featuring droved ashlar dressings and timber mullions.

On the southeast elevation, the central block contains four cottages arranged in a six-bay layout with attics, flanked by two T-plan cottages. The bipartite windows in the two central and two outer bays of the main block are sheltered by stone-bracketed canopies, and the intermediate bays have depressed arches with voussoired recesses. Above the bipartite windows are gabled dormerheads, along with two flat-roofed slate-hung dormers added in 1876. The single-storey cottages closest to the main block have advanced gabled bays, each featuring a stone-bracketed canopy above bipartite windows and a blind slit in the gablehead, while the outer bays have single windows set back.

The northwest elevation shows the main block with four rear entrances and symmetrically placed small windows. It also features four slate-hung dormer skylights that are partly glazed and small and square. The outer cottages have similar detailing.

The end elevations of the detached cottages have gabled end walls with blind windows, bracketted canopies, and blind slits in the apex. The windows are sash and case with 4-pane and lying-pane glazing patterns. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are ridge and gable end stacks on the main range, along with ridge stacks on the outer cottages. The skews have saw-tooth coping, and decorative skewputts adorn the gabled dormerheads.
