Description
Eastfield is a fine, early quadrangular steading built around 1850 during the Improvement period. It is constructed from squared and snecked red sandstone with stugged surfaces and droved dressings. The building features a lying-pane glazing pattern in its sash and case windows, crowstepped gables with beak skewputts, and it was formerly topped with ball finials. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there are diamond stacks, some of which are linked.
On the northeast elevation, there are 15 bays. At the center, there is a tall segmental pend entrance with chamfered arrises on the jambs and a small granary window above. There are five bays on each side of the entrance, each with segmental cart-arches and chamfered jambs, along with granary windows above. An arch to the left of the pend has been later blocked in brick, with a door and window inserted. The outer bays are slightly advanced and crowstepped, each consisting of two bays with doorways flanked by windows at ground level and hayloft doors above at the center.
The southwest elevation is asymmetrical and features a former cottage range. The center is a single storey, while the outer bays are two storeys. There is a doorway at the center, flanked by additional doors and cottage windows on each side. The slightly advanced gabled outer bays each have three bays and two storeys. The southern gables include kennels at ground level and a dog run, with a coped, railed walled courtyard in front. The doorway on the outer left gable is flanked by round-arched glazed narrow windows, and both gables have hayloft doors flanked by granary windows on the upper storeys, with the door to the left blocked and the windows glazed for cottage use.
The southeast elevation features a hayloft above various ancillary buildings, including stables and a slaughterhouse. There are pedestrian doorways in an irregular grouping, with currently blocked windows and hayloft windows above.
On the northeast elevation, there is an engine house projecting from the northern end, which has a yellow brick, circular section stalk with a moulded neck and coping.
Inside, a covered cattle court was added in 1879, featuring cast-iron columns and timber beams that cover the entire quadrangle. There are boarded timber stalls and cart divisions, as well as stone steps in the cartshed leading to the granary. The cottages retain a cast-iron range and grates.
