Chalkieside Steading

Chalkieside Farmhouse is a building that likely dates from the late 17th century, with a later addition from the 19th century. It is a long, former laird's house featuring a vaulted basement and first floor, situated on sloping ground with later farm buildings attached. There is also a single-storey and basement wing from the 19th century that is positioned at right angles to the main structure.

The 17th-century farmhouse is harled, with red sandstone ashlar margins. The north elevation is mostly blank at ground level, featuring one small opening at the center and one later window to the outer right. The first floor has five irregularly spaced 18th-century windows located under the eaves, and a 20th-century dormer has been added to the left. The south elevation has a basement recess due to the rising ground and is connected to the right by the 19th-century addition, which includes two doors leading to the vaulted basement.

The east gable has been altered to include machinery doors, while the west gable is abutted by the steading. The sash and case windows have plate glass glazing. The building features crowsteps and beak skewputts on its steeply pitched gables, with harled end and ridge stacks topped with thackstanes, and is covered with brown pantiles.

Inside, the farmhouse has a heavily pointed stone barrel-vaulted ceiling, with a deep, narrow window embrasure on the north side and an opening in the dividing wall to the west.

The 19th-century addition, also situated on falling ground, results in a single-storey and basement wing that is three bays deep. This section is constructed from stugged squared and snecked sandstone with chamfered arrises, and has harl-pointing on the east elevation. It features a door flanked by windows on the west side and a door to the basement on the east. The sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, and the addition has ashlar coped skews and a ridge stack, also covered with brown pantiles.
