Description
The Monktonhall Golf Club House, built in 1937 to a design by John Logan, is a prominent example of the Modern Movement’s “Flagship style.” Situated on a stepped and raised site overlooking the golf course, the building has undergone later additions and alterations, including a 20th-century hexagonal bay to the north corner.
The building is predominantly flat-roofed with a butterfly plan, presenting a near-symmetrical facade to the northeast overlooking the course. It features single-storey paired wings with a viewing roof terrace above, and a central pediment to a two-storey section. The exterior is white-painted harling, punctuated by horizontally styled metal glazing.
The east elevation features flat-roofed single-storey wings, with the north wing containing a basement. A viewing deck with horizontal railings sits above the wings, accessible via a centrally located entrance with a bracketed segmental canopy porch. A modern door leads to the entrance, preceded by a short flight of steps. An angular black addition extends from the north wing, with square basement windows. The south wing retains its original form, with windows along the entrance side and three facing outwards, all curved at the corners. A two-storey block to the west has a shallowly pitched wallhead behind the entrance bay, with two windows at the centre and a porch leading to the deck; the north and south elevations are rounded, each with a curved window.
The north elevation showcases two advanced two-storey bays connected by a single-storey infill. Each outer bay has a door and a short flight of steps, while irregular fenestration includes stair windows in the right bay. A single-storey changing room block is situated at the outer right. The south elevation features a door in the two-storey bays to the right, next to a re-entrant within the south wing, flanked by narrow windows. Central single-storey bays are balanced by two-storey bays behind.
Metal-framed casement windows with a 1930s glazing pattern are prevalent throughout, although some replacements exist. Replacement entrance doors are accompanied by boarded timber doors to service areas. A flagpole stands centrally on the east elevation.
A polished Peterhead granite memorial fountain is located near the east entrance, and is screened from the golf course by a curved hedge. It is a squat, circular form with a sturdy base, basin and a ball finial bearing a drinking cup and spout. The fountain is inscribed in memory of Bob Ferguson, a Musselburgh Open Championship Golfer (1880-1882) who died in 1915. The entrance is marked by low, rendered and stone-capped boundary walls with bespoke railings shaped like golf clubs.
The interior, observed in 2013, shows updated detailing in the bar areas from the late 20th century. Original detailing remains in the upper-floor former offices and accommodation areas, including a small cast-iron fireplace in a flat upstairs.
