Description

30-38 Lamer Street and 1-4 Buncles Court are a group of three-storey, L-plan housing units designed by Basil Spence and Partners between 1953 and 1956. This development features a blend of Modernist and vernacular architectural styles and is part of a municipal housing project situated around a drying green near the harbour, with the land sloping down to the east. The buildings are constructed from cavity brick, finished with painted harl, and feature red sandstone random rubble at the ground floor on the north and east elevations and gables. The gables have an eaves course, and the ground floor is set back to create an exterior entrance walkway at the first floor for the maisonettes. An exterior stair at the east gable elevation is supported by slender steel columns, leading to a concrete walkway with treads, balconies, some lintels, and projecting narrow cills, all enclosed by iron balustrades.

On the north elevation facing Buncles Court, there are six bays with irregular fenestration. The ground floor is recessed at the center and left of center, divided by a random rubble wall, with a store located at the outer left. The central recess contains a single entrance door (No. 1), while the second bay from the left has a door for the maisonette (No. 4). The left of center and outer right bay feature single entrance doors with half-glazed sidelights for Nos. 2 and 3.

The east elevation facing Lamer Street has five bays, including a two-bay gable on the right, with irregular fenestration. The ground floor is recessed in the outer bays and the bay to the right of center, with an overhang supported by iron columns. A forestair leads to a single entrance door in the return. The maisonettes at the second and third bays from the left have entrance doors with half-glazed sidelights (Nos. 34 and 36), while the left gable has a single entrance (No. 38) and a small projecting balcony at the third floor to the right.

The southwest rear elevation features regular fenestration and projecting balconies at the second floor. There are various replacement uPVC windows and doors throughout. The roofs are pitched with grey slate, and the random rubble chimneys have coped ridges, some topped with clay cans.

Internally, the simple layouts of the flats and maisonettes remain largely intact, with fisherman stores located on the ground floor, as seen in part during a visit in 2010.
