Description

19A, 19B, and 19C Victoria Street, including the boundary walls, were designed by Basil Spence and Partners between 1948 and 1951. This modernist building incorporates vernacular elements and consists of a 4-bay, 3-storey block that steps down and is connected at the southwest corner to a 4-bay, 2-storey block. It is part of a municipal housing development situated around a drying green near the harbour. The construction features cavity brick, primarily painted harl, with a base course of random rubble made from red sandstone.

The building includes a concrete walkway, treads, balconies, some lintels, projecting narrow cills, and projecting surrounds for the balcony openings, as well as stepped cantilevered canopies over the entrances to the maisonettes. Iron balustrades are also present, along with some raised windows in architraves.

The northern rectangular block (19A-C Victoria Street) has a flatted ground floor that extends outward to create an entrance walkway at the first floor for the maisonettes. An exterior stair leads to the first floor on the north elevation. The maisonettes feature a panelled timber entrance door with half-glazed sidelights. The fenestration is irregular, with a window opening on the ground floor wrapping around the southeast corner. There is a balcony at the second floor on the outer right of the north elevation, and ground floor stores are located to the west and beneath the forestair.

The southern rectangular block (10 and 12 Writer's Court) consists of two near-symmetrical, 2-bay maisonettes running north-south. The centre of the ground floor opening on the east elevation is made of random rubble. There is a balcony at the first floor on the outer left of the east elevation and also on the left of the west (rear) elevation. Entrance doors are located on the side (gable) elevations and are accessed by small forestairs on the east elevations.

The building features a variety of replacement uPVC glazing and doors, with pantile pitched roofs, harled and coped ridge and end stacks, and circular clay cans.

The interiors, partially seen in 2010, retain simple plan forms for the flats and maisonettes, with fisherman stores located on the ground floor.

The boundary walls are constructed from red sandstone random rubble with concrete copes and are stepped to follow the natural fall of the ground.
