Description

137 High Street in Dunbar is a house that dates from the 17th century to the early 18th century, with some later alterations. It is a three-storey structure built in an L-plan, featuring a two-storey extension at the rear, which is from the 18th century. There is also a wash-house at the eastern end. The building is constructed of red sandstone rubble, with a bull-nose rendered and painted western front and plain rubble on the northern side. The roofs are covered with pantiles.

The house is set back from the High Street at a lower level, extending along a narrow rigg. A single-storey, flat-roofed shop front was added in 1916. The original western front had a central door flanked by windows, and there were two windows on both the first and second floors, although these have since been altered and obscured by the shop front. To the south, there is a segmental arched entrance supported by timber beams and stone corbels. The eastern rear of the main wing features a swept dormer above a close bay. A turnpike stair bows from the eastern wing of the oldest part, corbelled to a square above, with the roof swept into the adjoining gabled roof.

Inside, the eastern rear section is in disrepair, with thick walls. Some 18th-century features remain, including panelled doors and window shutters on the second floor. There are also two large bakehouse ovens, which are now sealed at the rear end.
