Description
The Walled Garden at Amisfield Park, designed by John Henderson, features a datestone from 1786, although the walls may date back earlier. This large walled garden has a severe Roman neo-classical style and a square plan. It includes four circular corner pavilions that were originally domed and have niches, a cornice, and stepped copings. The tetrastyle porticos, which are set diagonally in the corners, are designed in Roman Doric style with coupled end columns, totaling six columns flanking the doorways. The eastern wall has a segmentally arched gateway with a keystone and impost blocks, while the southern wall features an architraved doorway with a frieze and cornice. The structure is built from squared and coursed conglomerate rubble, with ashlar used in the pavilions and columns made from single blocks of Craigleith sandstone. The projecting ashlar cope on the wall continues as a band course in the pavilions.
