Description

Herdmanflat Hospital, built around 1860 by Peddie & Kinnear, is a two-storey, seven-bay gabled building. The exterior is constructed of squared and snecked rubble stone with contrasting ashlar dressings and quoins, incorporating base, string, and eaves courses. A Tudor-arched doorway features a panelled timber door, flanking lights, and a four-part fanlight, with a moulded panel above. Segmental-headed, pedimented windows are set within hoodmoulds and drip moulds, with raked cills, stone mullions, and chamfered arrises.

The north-west (entrance) elevation is gabled, with a buttressed doorpiece in the central bay. Single windows are present in each floor of the flanking bays, and slightly advanced outer gables contain bipartite windows on each floor. Drip moulds run between floors, and moulded panels decorate the gableheads. Gabled returns provide windows on the ground floor, connecting to a lower rear link adjoining a larger block to the south-east.

The south-east elevation is a stepped, multi-bay design arranged in groups of seven. One group features advanced outer gables, each with a four-light canted window at ground level, a bipartite window above with a drip mould, and a moulded panel in the gablehead (the gable to the left includes a stack). Asymmetrically-fenestrated inner returns are present. Advanced gables flank the central bay, mirroring the above detailing, with a hoodmoulded bipartite window on the ground floor and a small flat-roofed porch with a narrow light to the outer re-entrant angle, a door on the return. A large, flat-roofed, single-storey projection extends from the central bay, featuring a deep blocking course, two bipartites, single windows to the chamfered outer angles, and further bipartites to the returns. The recessed face above incorporates three first-floor windows that break the eaves into pedimented dormerheads with trefoil detail. Bays two and six have regular fenestration flanking a shouldered stack piercing the eaves. A broad, asymmetrical bay extends to the outer right, with three windows on the ground floor and two on the first floor, and a three-bay return to the right with canted outer angles, regular fenestration (the ground floor centre with a later porch), and a polygonal roof.

The south-west elevation displays variety, including an advanced gable to the outer left with a cast-iron stair leading to a first-floor door.

The north-east elevation features advanced outer wings, forming a courtyard. Elements within the courtyard include a gabled bay to the right, a lower gabled projection, and a small piend-roofed bay in the re-entrant angle to the left.

Most windows contain 10- and 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered in grey slates, with coped, squared rubble and ashlar stacks, some of which are shouldered. Ashlar-coped skews have moulded skewputts.
