Description
The Fishermen's Monument, located at the Old Harbour in Dunbar, was built in 1856 and stands on the southeast corner of the inner basin. It is made of ashlar and rendered and painted block, measuring approximately 15 feet high and 9 feet 7 inches wide, resting on a pedestal that is 1 foot 10 inches tall. The sides and rear of the monument are channelled.
The monument features a relief of a fisherman leaving his family, which is made of painted plaster and set in a recess. This relief was created in 1861 by A Handyside Ritchie. There is a niche below the relief that was intended to hold a mercury barometer in a wooden case, made by Alexander Adie and Son, but this is currently missing. The monument is adorned with a festoon of shell-work and seaweed surrounding the dedication inscription.
