Description

Woodlands is a Scots-Tudor style house dating from 1850, designed by J.T. Rochead of Glasgow. It was extensively renovated in 1963, a timber conservatory was added in 1983, and an ancillary building was constructed in 1930. The house is an L-plan building of two storeys and four bays, featuring a conical-roofed stair tower and crowsteps. It is built of squared and snecked bull-faced rubble, with some Aberdeen bond and droved quoins, and incorporates base and eaves courses. Stone and timber mullions are used throughout.

The west (entrance) elevation is stepped, with a shoulder-arched doorway and timber door positioned to the right of centre. Above the door is a moulded panel with a lantern and a narrow light, leading to a gablehead featuring a relief carving of a crowned head. To the right at ground level is a large, decoratively-astragalled window, with a smaller window above, and an arrowslit. A two-window section flanks the stair tower. A projecting gable to the outer left contains a rectangular, bipartite window at ground level and a smaller bipartite window above. A set-back bay to the outer right has an altered timber bipartite window at ground level, surmounted by a further window that breaks the eaves into a crowstepped dormerhead.

The north elevation has a gabled bay with bipartite windows on each floor, and a large canted window with a stone roof on the right. A small window abuts the eaves at the centre. The east (rear) elevation is altered, featuring a window to the first floor of a gabled bay at centre, a bipartite window to the right at ground level, and a small horizontal bipartite window close to the eaves above. A lower, two-storey, crowstepped extension projects to the left. The south elevation has a gabled bay with an altered window at ground level and a conservatory to the right.

The windows are mostly small-pane, with some horizontal, multi-pane leaded glazing to the stair tower. The conical roof is covered in graded grey slates, with mixed slates to the main roof. The chimneys are coped and banded ashlar stacks accompanied by ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewputts.

The interior features decorative cornicing and panelled timber shutters. A stone staircase is present, alongside a carved timber fireplace and architraved wall cupboards.

Ancillary buildings include a crowstepped, rectangular-plan building with a two-leaf timber door to the north and a coped ashlar stack with a can. A further crowstepped building of 1930 features a broad, part-glazed timber garage door to the south.

The property is bounded by flat-coped rubble boundary walls, with slender square-section gatepiers and ironwork gates.
