Description
The former Glasgow Corporation Water Works gate lodge, known as North Lodge or Craigmaddie Lodge, dates from around 1900 and has undergone later alterations. This single-storey and attic building features a T-plan layout and is a symmetrical semi-detached pair of dwellings. It has a central quadripartite dormer on both the front and rear, with swept porches on the outer bays and a single-storey service range at the back. The structure is constructed from squared, stugged, snecked sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, and includes a base course and deep bracketed eaves. The front is adorned with stone-mullioned bipartite windows.
The central section has three bays and a piend roof, with bipartite windows at ground level and a quadripartite, piend-roofed dormer that breaks the eaves in the center. The gabled end bays are recessed and slightly lower, featuring swept-roof porches supported by turned timber balusters. A round-arched window is present on the side, and the gable above has king-post trussed bargeboards, with mini oriels corbelled out in the rear re-entrant angle. The single-storey service wing at the rear also has a piended roof.
The windows throughout are predominantly plate glass in timber sash and case style. A broad central corniced ridge stack with red clay cans is visible, and the roof is covered with grey slate and crested red terracotta ridge tiles.
Inside, both houses feature curved timber staircases with polished handrails and cast-iron banisters, along with a moulded cornice in the front room and timber-panelled interior doors throughout.
The property includes sub-Macintosh style two-leaf iron entrance gates, chamfered gatepiers with deep cushion caps, and curved railings flanking the entrance.
