Description
Craighead Primary School, built between 1902 and 1903 by David Woodburn Sturrock, is a single-storey, six-bay, T-plan symmetrical former school building. It features squared and snecked stugged yellow sandstone with ashlar dressings and a rock-faced base course. The building has large quatripartite mullioned and transomed windows with pediments that break the eaves, each containing relief busts carved in stone within semicircular arched niches. The rafters are exposed, and there is a modern grey brick entrance extension to the south.
On the principal east elevation, the advanced outer bays have large mullioned and transomed windows with gables above. The entrance to the youth centre is located in the second bay from the left, accessed by four steps, with an adjoining narrow transomed window. There are two bipartite mullioned and transomed windows and a former door that now forms a bipartite window. To the far left, there is a flat-roofed entrance and ramp leading to the library.
The north and south elevations feature a quatripartite window with a pediment above and a single tall window. The west elevation has brickwork at the northwest angle and a datestone on the pediment of the central projecting bay, dated 1903.
The building has modern timber doors and predominantly three-pane sash and case windows, although the transoms are false. The roof is piended with a flat roof over the central bays at the front, covered in grey slate with perforated clay ridge tiles and sheet metal ventilators. There is a wallhead stack on the north side and cast iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the school features arched roof trusses with hanging finials, decorative ventilator grilles, and rooflights in the pitches. The boundary walls are modern brick with railings.
