Description

St Kieran's Primary School, built in 1906, is a single-storey, eleven-bay school building designed by Henry Edward Clifford and situated on a sloping site in Campbeltown. The building is constructed of stugged squared and snecked ashlar with droved red sandstone ashlar dressings. Windows have projecting cills, corniced at both the principal and side elevations.

The east (principal) elevation is near-symmetrical, grouped 3-2-1-2-3 bays. The central bay is broad and gabled, featuring a round-arched recess framed by strip pilasters, containing a bipartite window with a corniced and bracketed cill and cornice above. A Gibbsian architrave surrounds the arch head, incorporating a datestone. Corniced pedestals are located at the corners on the outer left and right.

The south elevation features a projecting entrance porch with a wide entrance door centrally positioned and a corniced parapet above. A narrow window cill centers the gabled south elevation. The north elevation is a mirrored image of the south, except for an eight-step concrete forestair to the entrance door and a square basement window at the outer left. The west elevation is symmetrical, composed of nine bays grouped 3-3-3.

The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows in the principal openings, and 4-panel entrance doors with glazed uppers, leading to 2-leaf 4-panel inner doors with glazed uppers. The main block is topped with a grey slate piended M-roof, incorporating lead-covered octagonal ventilator bases at the ridge, and grey slate pitched roofs to the porches. There are overhanging timber eaves with profiled cast-iron gutters and cast-iron downpipes with urn hoppers flanking the centre three bays of the front and rear elevations and side windows of the porches. The central gable has ashlar skew copes, culminating in a square pedestal and ball finial at the apex, and octagonal shafts with ball finials at the eaves. Porches also have ashlar skew copes.

The interior features a central hall to the west, with a green and white tiled dado and an open timber roof with skylights. A classroom screen separates the hall from the classrooms to the east, topped by 12-pane fixed-lights above a tiled dado. Classrooms are divided by screens with a vertically-boarded timber dado and 2-pane fixed-lights over 4-light fixed-lights, accessed via 4-panel doors with glazed uppers.

To the south and north are playshelters; a 3-bay shelter and a 5-bay shelter respectively. These shelters have cast-iron columns supporting timber monopitch roofs with a corrugated-iron finish.

Boundary walls and railings enclose the playground. Battered random rubble playground walls with a saddleback cope are on the north and south sides, stepped with an ashlar cope and cast-iron railing to the east. Stugged ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps support two-leaf cast-iron gates. A random rubble wall with a concrete cope runs along the west boundary.
