Description
This is a late 19th-century lodge, dated 1883, built as a gatehouse to Auchinleck House, a separate listed building dating to around 1760. The lodge is single-storied with three bays, and has a more recent, rendered addition at the rear that does not match the original design. The exterior is built with snecked, stugged ashlar, featuring raised polished ashlar quoins, a base course, eaves course, and stop-chamfered reveals. The roof is covered in renewed grey slates with saw-tooth skews and ball finials on the gables. A central doorway is topped with a strip-pane fanlight, and a gabled dormerhead breaks the eaves above, displaying a date stone and cast-iron ridge brattishing. Bipartite windows with 2-pane sash and case frames are located on either side of the central door. A lower, modern wing projects at right angles to the rear.
The gates and railings are of a similar date. They consist of two-leaf cast-iron gates, flanked by two ashlar gatepiers with ball finials and cornices. There is also a side gate and railings set on dwarf walls with stepped copes. The central ridge stack of the lodge has been removed. Historical context is documented in references by Helen J Steven (1898) and J Paterson (1863).
