Description

Northern Byre at Muirshiel Farm is likely an early 19th-century farmhouse that has seen additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a three-bay, single-storey structure with an attic, and has bipartite dormers. The farmhouse is set within a U-shaped courtyard, with byres located to the north and south. The house is rendered with ashlar dressings, while the byres are constructed from whitewashed random rubble. The house has raised ashlar window margins, and the byres are accented with long and short droved sandstone quoins.

The house includes a central mid-20th-century porch with a piend roof, which is fully glazed and features a bevelled glass inner door and flanking windows. The attic has bipartite piend-roofed dormers. The rear (west) elevation is irregularly fenestrated and includes a 20th-century two-storey and basement piend-roofed addition in the center, along with a conservatory to the left.

The windows are timber sash and case with 4-pane glazing. The house has coped, rendered stacks with yellow clay cans and ashlar-coped skews, all covered with graded grey slate.

The south range was formerly a threshing barn, built in an L-plan with a gable to the east and a piend roof to the west. It has sliding timber boarded doors leading to the courtyard and a raised section of wallhead in the center with a swept roof, along with slit windows.

The north range features an M-gable to the east, with a stone byre on the left that has a pigeon loft at the gable apex, and a 20th-century brick byre on the right with a sliding door. There is also a piend-roofed addition with a brick stack at the rear of the brick byre, along with timber-boarded doors.
