Description
West Lodge at Dunlop House is a single-storey gate lodge designed by David Hamilton around 1834, with extensions from circa 1905 and later 20th century additions. The lodge has an irregular plan and features shouldered gables topped with stone finials, a canted bay window, an advanced porch, and decorative stonework. The main structure is built of squared, coursed, stugged sandstone with polished ashlar dressings, while the circa 1905 extension uses random rubble, and the later addition is rendered.
The northwest (front) elevation consists of four bays. To the right is a timber panelled front door with a simple raised architrave and strapwork detail above, situated in the advanced porch which has a finialed gable and buckle quoins. The center has two windows, one of which is blind, and to the left is an advanced gabled bay with strapwork detailing above the window. There is a blind wall on the left (northeast) return.
On the other elevations, the southwest (side) elevation features a piended-roofed, three-light, canted window to the left and a single window to the right. The southeast (rear) elevation has an advanced gable with strapwork detail above the window, and a piend-roofed later 20th century addition with a recessed glazed back door.
The windows predominantly feature plate glass in timber sash and case frames, and the building has ashlar-coped skews and a graded grey slate roof.
The boundary walls consist of low random rubble quadrant walls topped with saddle-coped stone and cast-iron spear-headed railings. The gatepiers are octagonal, made of sandstone ashlar, with panelled capitals and conical caps.
