Description
The Memorial to Alexander Morton, located on Darvel Road, was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and constructed between 1926 and 1927. It features a semi-octagonal plan made of snecked rubble with cream sandstone ashlar dressings. The central bay has a raised semi-octagonal feature that houses a bronze bust of Morton, which is slightly corbelled out and set in a round-headed niche. The dates of Morton's birth and death are displayed beside the bust, and an inscription below reads, "Alexander Morton who led this valley to industrial fame and prosperity."
The flanking bays include plain copes, bas-relief panels, and additional inscriptions. On the left side, there is a relief depicting a hand-loom weaver and a woman pirn winder, accompanied by the inscription, "The wonder of the world: the beauty and the power: the shapes of things." On the right side, a relief shows a power lace loom with the inscription, "Their colours lights and shades: these I saw: look ye also while life lasts." Below these reliefs, there are plain wooden benches supported by stone.
The end bays are lower than the flanking bays and feature concave-curved copes that lead down to short plinths for sculptures. On the left, there is a sculpture of a boy holding a corn sheaf and sickle, while on the right, a girl with a flying shuttle wears a cloche-style hat. The inscription below the boy reads, "Erected by public subscription." The memorial has a deep, slightly battered base course and is flanked by simple wrought iron railings. A paved area, bounded by walls, is accessed by a flight of four stairs.
