Description
The Infant Block of Galston Primary School, built around 1875 by William Railton, is a single-story building with an attic, designed in a Renaissance Revival style. It features an irregular plan arranged around an internal three-sided courtyard. The building is constructed from bull-faced squared and snecked red sandstone, with polished dressings. Long and short quoins highlight the corners, and architraved window openings have long and short dressings. An eaves cornice runs along the top of the walls.
The main, southwest-facing elevation is near-symmetrical, with four windows in a recessed central bay. Gabled bays extend to the left and right, each containing a pair of windows. A segmental pediment sits above the windows in the gabled bays, and a flagpole rises through the apex of the gable on the right. A balustraded parapet flanks the left gable, and windows are present on the internal returns.
The northeast-facing rear elevation has a gabled bay with a tall, tripartite, segmental-arched window, flanked by single segmental-arched windows. To the right are three bays, and to the left are two, with an outer gabled bay featuring a tripartite window.
The northwest elevation showcases two gabled bays separated by a recessed courtyard bay with regular window placement. A gable on the left has a tripartite window and a blocked oculus above. The right gable features two architraved windows and a keyblocked oculus above. Further bays extend to the outer right.
The southwest elevation includes an advanced, asymmetrical bay with a pedimented entrance on the left and a single window with a slit window above it, centrally placed. Two bays are recessed to the right. An advanced gabled bay is located on the outer right, containing a bipartite window within a segmental-arched hoodmould. Three windows and a gabled bay featuring a segmental-arched door are incorporated into the internal return.
The windows are timber sash and case, with small-pane upper sashes and two-pane lower sashes. The roofs are covered with grey-green slate, accented by terracotta ridge tiles and fish-scale slates on the southeast gables. Coped stone skewputts are situated above tall blocked skewputts. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted, complemented by large top hoppers. The interior was not inspected in 2003.
Iron gates, gate piers, boundary walls, and railings are located at the property. The square-plan gate piers are constructed from ashlar, featuring corniced necks and spherical caps. A low snecked rubble wall with copes and railings encloses the playground facing the street. A coped rubble wall surrounds the playground on the side and rear. The wrought-iron railings and gates are in an Art Nouveau/Arts and Crafts style, exhibiting fluid foliate motifs alongside square panels pierced with small squares and hearts.
