Description

The former Mill and Engine House at Baltic Works, located at 28 Annfield Road in Dundee, was built by Pearce Brothers of Lilybank Foundry in 1872, with a prominent chimney stalk dating back to 1864. The chimney is an octagonal structure made of red brick, featuring white brick dog-legs and iron tie bands, and it rises above a tall pedestal adorned with a polychrome brick cornice, ashlar roll-moulding, and broaches.

The 1872 engine house and mill originally consisted of an 8-bay section with only an iron roof. It includes eight north-lit sheds, with the western elevation constructed of rubble and featuring three half-pitched roofs. Five of the sheds to the north have been extended westward by 33 feet to a harled brick wall. The southern elevation is also made of rubble and has sliding doors, some of which are original while others have been blocked. The eastern elevation is harled brick with wooden boarding in front of iron trusses, which indicates a planned extension that was never completed. The north-lit roofs are saw-toothed and slated.

Inside, the mill features impressive traceried gothic cast-iron spans with elaborate crossbeams on the eastern side to support pulleys for rope drives. The columns are double-bracketted and topped with bell capitals. The tall rubble engine house has two round-headed windows on the southern side, while the eastern and western elevations are blank, and there is a blocked panel on the northern side for ropes. The interior has a later concrete floor, large timber roof beams, and cast-iron hooks. The western mansard gable is topped with a flat-topped finial.
