Description
East Block, 8 Tait’s Lane, Dundee is a simple, three-storey tenement building dating to circa 1860. It comprises three blocks, divided by ridge stacks, and originally provided 18 flats. The building is constructed of rubble.
The south elevation features two free-standing, semi-circular stair towers. These provide access to the first and second-floor flats via pletties – stone, flagged balconies supported on narrow steel members – with wrought-iron railings. A western stair serves a single tenement with two flats per pletty. Each floor contains paired doors flanked by a slit window and a single main window. An eastern stair serves a double tenement with four flats per pletty; the windows are arranged in a 1-2-1, 1-2-1 pattern between the doors, with adjacent slit windows.
The north elevation has a twelve-window front. The western tenement features two single lights and paired central slit windows. The eastern and central tenements have windows grouped in pairs between tall centre wallhead stacks. The west gable features off-centre single windows and a blocked door on the ground floor. Skewputts and gable end stacks are also present.
The roof is slate, with gable end, ridge, and wallhead stacks. The windows are predominantly four-pane sash and case, although some have been altered.
The building was selected for group value as one of the least altered examples of a mid-19th century Dundee tenement with pletties, and retains its original stacks, lacking later water closet towers.
