289 Hawkhill, Dundee

293 Hawkhill in Dundee is a building designed by James MacLaren and dated 1868, consisting of five tenements in the Jacobean style, which are stepped to accommodate the sloping ground. The structure is made of coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings.

Each tenement is framed by tall pilasters topped with urn finials. The central entrance on the ground floor features a consoled corniced doorpiece, flanked by single and bipartite windows. The ground floor has flat mouldings, with bipartite windows adorned with scrolled shields. The first-floor windows are pilastered and corniced, connected by aprons to the second-floor windows. A main band course runs along the building. The tall wall-head stack is constructed with rubble on the lower part and ashlar above, featuring flutings and apron panels. The roof is steeply pitched and platformed, covered with slate, and includes single and bipartite dormers.

Above the entrance to No. 289, there is a cartouche inscribed "C L Gowrie Place 1868". All windows are sash and case, with a 4-pane glazing pattern for single lights and 2 panes for bipartites.

Each entrance is accessed by steps that are situated between elaborately capped gatepiers. The property is also bordered by low coped garden walls with wrought-iron railings, although the railings are missing from No. 297.
