Description
Blackness Primary School, designed by architect James H Langlands in 1892, is a two-storey building with a rear basement, showcasing Renaissance architectural style. The front is made of ashlar stone, while the sides and rear are constructed from coursed rubble. The north front is symmetrical with three bays, where the central bays are recessed and feature a bipartite window. The ground floor has a channelled appearance, and the first floor is finished in ashlar. The windows are arranged in groups of three, with the central windows having margins and cornices at the ground level and segmental pediments above on the first floor. The side windows are plain at the ground level but have margins and cornices on the first floor. Decorative pilasters with scrolled details adorn the ground floor cornice, while Ionic pilasters are present at the main cornice of the first floor. The building is topped with a balustrade featuring large urns on dies.
Each side elevation consists of six bays made of coursed rubble, with the four left-hand bays projecting forward and featuring pedimented entrance doors for boys and girls, along with decorative cast-iron gas lamps in the re-entrant angle. Ionic pilasters and urns are only found on the west elevation. A stack projects from the east elevation.
The south elevation is simpler, also two-storey with a basement, featuring windows grouped in three sets of three. The central windows are bipartite, and there are continuous cill courses, a first-floor band course, and a parapet. The left bay is slightly advanced and includes a janitor's house in the basement. The remainder of the basement is open to the playground, supported by box steel girders.
Inside, there are central halls and a lightwell with classrooms branching off. The first-floor hall rises to a cupola light and features a second-floor cast-iron balcony and a timber roof. Borrowed lights illuminate the halls through shouldered arched recesses between pilasters, with Ionic pilasters on the ground and first floors and Doric pilasters on the second. The interior includes a Greek Key theme and anthemion tiled dados and stairs.
One classroom has been fitted out by Dundee District Museums as a Victorian schoolroom, complete with furnishings from the Dundee School Board.
