Description

The Bank of Scotland, located at 35-39 Murraygate in Dundee, was designed by David Cousin in 1858 and incorporates an earlier building. This palazzo-style bank is three stories high with five bays, constructed from sandstone ashlar and snecked pinkish rubble, featuring cream ashlar dressings at the rear and a concealed slate roof. Architectural details include a base course, a string course at the ground floor, a dentilled cill course at the first floor, a cill band at the second floor, a decorative wallhead frieze, and a deep modillioned cornice. The windows are architraved on the ground and first floors, consoled and corniced at the ground floor, consoled and pedimented at the first floor, and angle-headed in recessed square-headed panels on the second floor, with 2-pane timber sash and case windows, smaller panes at the top. A corniced ridge stack completes the design.

The front elevation features a central two-leaf panelled door with a portico supported by paired Corinthian columns and topped with four acroteria. To the right are two windows, and to the left is a window and a two-leaf panelled door at the far left, which has a doorcase detailed like a window. The first floor has five windows, with the central window featuring colonettes, while the second floor has six windows.

On the east elevation facing Horse Wynd, there are three ground floor and two basement windows in the central block, a door and a first-floor window in the advanced block to the right, and a window in the recessed block to the left. The rear elevation includes various 2- and 12-pane sash and case windows.

Inside, the banking hall boasts a pilastered frieze with a key pattern and anthemion decoration, supported by eight Corinthian columns that hold up a large central semi-glazed dome. The interior also features triangular-pedimented timber doorcases, two marble chimneypieces, and a gilt wall clock by Rattray of Dundee, which depicts the royal arms.

Additionally, decorative cast-iron railings adorn the front elevation and enclose the re-entrant angles on the Horse Wynd elevation. There are also four cast-iron baluster-type lamp standards on tall octagonal bases, complete with ladder bars and globe lanterns.
