Description
14 and 16 Murragate in Dundee is a late 18th-century building that was remodeled in 1911 with upper floors added in the Arts and Crafts style by William Gauldie and Robert Hardie. It is a four-storey and attic, three-bay commercial building featuring a shopfront on the ground floor. The first floor is finished in painted rubble, while the other floors are harled with painted dressings. The building has a steeply pitched grey slate roof.
The ground floor has a modern shopfront, and above it, there is a corniced fascia over the first-floor windows. A lintel course runs along the second and third floors, and there is a cornice at the jettied attic. The first and second floors have architraved windows with two-pane sash and case glazing. The third floor features single and canted cross windows with buckle quoin pattern architraves and decorative pargetting-type aprons. The attic includes a box dormer and bow-windowed pedimented dormers with cartouches at the timpani, as well as multi-pane leaded lights, although the bow windows have modern plate glass. The right gable has an ashlar-coped skew and a corniced brick end stack.
The front elevation shows the modern shopfront on the ground floor, with three windows and an additional window at the splayed angle on the left for the first and second floors. The center window on the second floor has a segmental pediment, while the third floor has a single window in the center flanked by canted windows, which are squared-off on the left over the splay of the lower floors. The attic features a box dormer flanked by pedimented dormers. The interior has not been seen.
