Description
Vernonholme is a large, two-storey villa designed by David Baxter of Johnston and Baxter and dated 1910. The west and south elevations are finished in ashlar stone, while the east and north elevations are of snecked rubble. The villa features channelled angles, lugged architraves and keystones to the windows, all linked by a single sill course.
The west elevation is symmetrical with seven bays, incorporating an advanced central loggia with a triple arcade supported by double Roman Ionic columns with marble shafts. A heavy, consoled balustraded balcony sits above the loggia, with a canted oriel window above that. Flanking the ground floor are advanced square bays, each tripartite with a single light return and a balustrade. Single windows are placed to the side and above these bays. A dentil cornice runs along the top of the elevation, and twin banded ashlar stacks are present.
The south elevation is also symmetrical, with four bays, and advanced end bays featuring canted bipartite windows through both floors. The centre has tripartite windows, one of which is a French window. A garden balustrade links the advanced end bays, with a central flight of steps incorporating dies. A dentil cornice and banded ashlar stacks complete the south elevation.
The east elevation has five bays, including single windows and one corniced tripartite window; a former French window is now altered. New window insertions, lacking architraves, are visible below a wallhead stack, in the second windows from the left. A lower two-storey service wing is present, featuring plain windows and a massive banded ashlar stack. A modern extension also contributes to the building.
The rear of the house is arranged in a U-plan, around a courtyard enclosed by a single-storey block with a louvred ventilator. A stepped three-light arched stair window is prominent. The remaining windows are plain. The roofs are piended and platformed, covered in slate. Sash and case windows are fitted with a two-pane glazing pattern.
Inside, a fine timber staircase features a stained glass window and a timber arcaded landing. The principal rooms are adorned with low-relief plaster ceilings, one of which is initialled and dated. A boardroom is oak-panelled and includes an oak Ionic chimneypiece. Another chimneypiece is carved with the inscription 'East West Hame's Best'. Some rooms have been partitioned to create offices.
A near contemporary garage is timber framed on a coursed rubble base, with timber sliding doors and fixed windows. The roof is half glazed and half slated.
A lodge, also by David Baxter in 1910, is of ashlar construction and shares detailing with the main house. It is a one-storey L-plan building with a pyramidal roofed porch in a re-entrant angle, and canted lights to the gables. It has piended swept slate roofs and wallhead stacks.
Five square-section gate piers are present, three channelled with highly ornate consoled finials, and two capped piers. Low boundary walls enclose the property.
