36-42 Union Street, Dundee

This public house, located at 42 Union Street in Dundee, is an earlier 19th-century building that stands four stories tall with an attic and features a four-bay tenemental design with shops on the ground floor. The exterior is constructed from sandstone ashlar and topped with a slate roof. The ground floor has a cornice, and there is a cill band at the second floor level, along with an eaves course. The first and second floor windows have lugged architraves, and the original 12-pane timber sash and case glazing pattern is preserved in the two left-hand bays of the second floor and the two right-hand bays of the third floor. The other windows have a two-pane design, except for the two left-hand bays of the third floor, which feature out-of-character casements. The roof includes two multi-pane box dormers and two piended dormers, along with ridge stacks.

On the front elevation, there is a close door to the right of the ground floor, an altered shopfront to the left, and a little altered public house front to the right. Each upper floor has four windows, and there are four dormers above.

Inside, the public house retains much of its original character, highlighted by notable etched glass that reads 'The Star and Garter'.
