31, 33 Commercial Street, Dundee

27 and 29 Commercial Street in Dundee is a late 19th-century tenement and commercial building designed by John Bruce. It features five storeys and an attic, with a seven-bay façade made of sandstone ashlar and topped with a slate roof. The ground floor has shopfronts with original piers and a cornice, including two double doors set in a keystoned and pilastered round-headed doorcase with a fanlight above.

The building has a corniced parapet and paired brackets at the left-hand door. The first floor is channelled, with a cill course at the second floor. The third floor features a frieze and a dentilled and corbelled main cornice, along with a wallhead course and cornice. The first-floor windows are shouldered with moulded cavetto reveals, while the second floor has five centrally placed windows that are architraved with alternating triangular and segmental pediments, corbelled cills, and cill panels. The third and fourth floors have architraved windows, with the fourth floor featuring keystoned and round-headed windows.

The dormers include a single aediculed dormer (with the pediment removed), two round-headed leaded dormers on the left and right, and bipartite pedimented dormers at both ends. The windows throughout are fitted with two-pane timber sash and case frames, and there are corniced axial stacks on the roof.

The front elevation has a central door on the ground floor, with another door to the right, both flanked by shopfronts. There are eleven windows on the first floor, five on the second and third floors flanked by two-storey canted oriels, nine windows on the fourth floor, and seven dormers above. The interior details were not observed.
