Description

63 Monifieth Road in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, is a late 19th-century, two-storey and attic, asymmetrical L-plan terrace consisting of six houses on a corner site. The building features ashlar masonry, with rubble on the sides and rear, and is painted at No 67 Monifieth Road, with painted dressings at No 3 Norrie Street and Nos 63 and 65 Monifieth Road. The roof is slate.

Notable architectural features include a full-height, four-light canted window at the southwest corner, consoled doorpieces, and moulded architraves. The full-height canted windows are chamfered at the arris, and the houses have two- and four-pane sash and case windows, although Nos 3 Norrie Street and 69 Monifieth Road have aluminium frames that are not in keeping. There is a band course at the first floor, dentilled eaves, and a Mansard roof with ashlar skews and dividers. Round-headed dormers are present, though there are out of keeping replacements at No 3 Norrie Street and Nos 65, 67, and 69 Monifieth Road, along with a box dormer at No 1 Norrie Street. The southwest corner features a pavilion roof with three dormers, fish-scale and banded slates, and cast- or wrought-iron brattishing. The gablehead and wallhead have moulded stacks, most of which retain their original cans. Moulded cast-iron rainwater goods and four cast-iron rooflights are also present. PVC canopies cover the doors at Nos 3 Norrie Street and 65 Monifieth Road.

On the southeast elevation facing Monifieth Road, there are four two-storey houses. No 63 has an entrance door with a single window above, a blind oculus at the band course to the left, and bipartite windows on the ground and first floors to the right, along with a dormer. Nos 65, 67, and 69 are similar but feature canted windows, with No 65 having the door positioned to the right.

The west elevation facing Norrie Street includes No 3 on the left, which is a two-bay house similar to No 65 Monifieth Road. No 1 has an entrance door at the centre (introduced in 1930), a bipartite window to the left, and a similar window on the first floor that has been extended to a tripartite window (also from 1930). There is a dormer and four-light canted windows at the corner of Monifieth Road on the right.

The rear elevation of each house features a symmetrically arranged door and window at the ground floor, two windows at the first floor, and two dormers. Some original eight-pane sash and case windows remain, along with a single-storey projection with a half piended roof on the left.
