Description

The building known as the Archway and Steps at St Roque's Hall, located at 34-42 Commercial Street in Dundee, dates from the later 19th century. It is a three-storey structure with ten bays, housing a hall and offices, and featuring shops on the ground floor. The front is constructed from stugged sandstone coursers, while the sides and rear are made of stugged and snecked rubble, with ashlar dressings. The roof is slate, adorned with decorative terracotta ridge tiles.

The architectural details include a corniced ground floor, a string course at the first and second floors, and a coped parapet decorated with quatrefoils. Gabletted buttresses rise through the parapet, topped with obelisk finials. The windows are timber cross types with lying panes and chamfered margines, and there are alternate hoodmoulds at the first floor. The gables feature windows set within two-storey, pointed-arch, hoodmoulded panels that have ornamental details between the floors. A tall octagonal crocketted fleche is positioned at the center, with a pointed-arch arcaded drum and sawtooth-coped skews, along with corniced stacks.

On the front elevation, there are four original shopfronts on the ground floor, although some alterations have been made to the left. These shopfronts are supported by slender cast-iron columns. The upper floors have two 2-storey panels at the center, with windows and a gable that breaks through the parapet, featuring a quatrefoil in the roof space. Each side has three bays, each consisting of a 2-storey panel with windows and a gable that breaks through a pediment at the center, flanked by windows on the first and second floors.

The right return elevation features a gable to the left, with a pointed-arch panel on the first and second floors that includes windows and a sculpted relief panel of the Good Shepherd between the floors, topped with a continuous stepped hoodmould. A lower two-bay wing is slightly recessed to the right, with a coped parapet, a door that has an armorial panel above, a stair window to the right, and two windows on the first floor.

The left return elevation is similar to the right but has a courtyard wall extending to the left, with various doors and windows, and lacks the relief panel.

The interior has not been seen but is known to have been altered.

Additionally, there is a boundary wall, archway, and steps that consist of a coped rubble boundary wall extending to High Street, leading to the steps of St Paul's Cathedral. The archway features a pointed arch with a gabletted stepped overarch and a cross finial. The steps are scale and platt, with gablet-coped flanks leading to the upper floors and Castle Hill House, which is also listed.
