Description
Bridgend Bridge is a near semi-circular, single-arch stone bridge that crosses the Abbey Burn to the east of Dundrennan village on the road to the Old Kirkyard of Rerrick. It has a span of 16 feet 6 inches. The bridge is likely of medieval origin and is believed to have been primarily used by the community of Dundrennan Abbey. Originally 9 feet in width, it was widened in the 19th century to a total of 15 feet 6 inches.
The southern portion features an outer arch ring made of finely dressed voussoirs and a single stone rib, all with chamfered angles, along with granite springers and a dressed rubble soffit and abutments. The northern side, which was added later, has dressed voussoirs and a rough rubble soffit. Both parapets have been rebuilt and heavily repointed.
