Description
The building is a general property consisting of several ranges constructed over different periods, primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries. It presents as a Z-plan block with two two-storey, three-bay houses facing the roadside, sharing a common roofline. Both these houses are rendered to appear as ashlar. The house closest to the east contains a shop. A further two-storey, three-bay house, dating to the early 19th century and known as "Five Bells," is located at the northeast end of the block and is harled with ashlar margins. The inner part of the block is oriented eastward and incorporates a two-storey, three-bay range nearest the south. Adjoining this is a converted mid-18th century barn, now a house named "The Cottage," with exposed stonework, a blocked large depressed-arch barn door, and first-floor windows with raised gabled dormer heads. Chimneys are situated at the ends of the building, and the roofs are slate. The building's category was changed from B to C(S) on October 4, 1988. The statutory address is Rigg Village, The Square, House with Shop and Houses Adjoining, The Cottage and Five Bells.
