Description
The remains of a medieval chapel, likely dating from the 13th century, have been partially incorporated into 18th and early 19th century cottages. The chapel fragments comprise parts of the east and west gables. The west gable is freestanding and built of rubble with red ashlar dressings. It features a window with a moulded arch, originally containing three pointed lights. The taller east gable has a blocked doorway.
The cottages are single-storey and originally comprised three bays, now extended to five. The chapel fragment forms the west gable of the cottages, which are built of rubble and whitewashed with contrasting painted margins. They have sash windows with four-pane glazing. The south elevation includes what was originally an entrance door, now a window. A timber porch has been added to the right, and stonework and a smaller window to the left suggest earlier fabric incorporated into the structure. The cottages have end stacks and a slate roof. A modern rear (north) addition has been built.
The window in the west gable of the chapel sits surprisingly low relative to the height of the east gable, and the doorway in the east gable is distinctive. The statutory address is Chapel Farm Cottages and Fragments of St Cuthbert’s Chapel. This site is referenced in the RCAHM Inventory of 1920, number 383.
