Description

The property comprises farm cottages incorporating fragments of a medieval chapel, likely dating from the 13th century. The chapel remains are partially incorporated into 18th and early 19th century cottages.

The chapel itself is of Gothic design. Surviving fragments include portions of its east and west gables. The west gable stands free and features a window with a moulded arch, originally containing three pointed lights; the taller east gable has a blocked doorway. The chapel is constructed of rubble with red ashlar dressings.

The cottages are single-storey and originally comprised three bays, now extended to five. The west gable of the chapel forms the west gable of the cottages. The cottages are rubble-built and whitewashed, with contrasting painted margins and sash windows with four-pane glazing. The south elevation features an original door, now a window, and a timber porch to the right. Stone detailing and a smaller window to the left, adjacent to the chapel, indicate the incorporation of earlier fabric. Brick end stacks rise from the roof, which is covered in slate. A modern addition is located at the rear (north) of the cottages.

A notable feature is the relatively low height of the west gable window compared to the east gable, and the unusual doorway in the east gable. The statutory address is Chapel Farm Cottages and Fragments of St Cuthbert’s Chapel. The site is referenced in the RCAHM Inventory of 1920, number 383.
