Description

Glen Trool Lodge is an earlier 19th-century shooting lodge of single-storey and attic design, with an asymmetrical, gabled plan. The exterior is constructed of coursed granite with polished granite dressings. Notable features include raised margins, some of which are chamfered at ground floor level, and gabled dormerheads. The roofs are covered with half-piend slate, particularly over the canted windows. The majority of the windows are two-light designs, and original boarded doors are present.

The west (entrance) elevation features a gabled porch to the left, with a door to the north return and a window to the west. There is a three-light window at ground floor level and a dormerheaded window at first floor level in flanking bays. A gable is advanced to the right, with an enlarged porch incorporating a canted window, a glazed half-piend roof over a rectangular projection, and shallow steps leading to a two-leaf door. Single-light windows flank the canted angles, and a window is set in the gablehead. A further gable is advanced to the outer right, featuring a ground floor canted window with a bipartite layout to the west, another window set in the gablehead, and a gabled outhouse projecting to the outer left, containing a depressed-arched door to the south return and a single-light window to the west.

The south elevation shows a gable advanced to the right, with a canted window at ground floor level, bipartite in design to the south, and a window in the gablehead. A three-light window is located at ground floor level to the left, with a dormerheaded window at first floor level above.

The east elevation has a bipartite French window to the left, with a dormerheaded window at first floor level above. A tall window is situated flanking to the right at ground floor level. A gable is advanced to the right, incorporating a rectangular window at ground floor level, quadripartite in design to the east, and a window in the gablehead. A further gable is advanced to the outer right, featuring a two-light window in the gablehead and a window to the left at ground floor level. A modern passage addition is linked to a single-storey corrugated iron building to the east, with a door providing access.

The north elevation is twin-gabled, with an adjoining lean-to at ground floor level. A gable to the left is advanced, with a dormerheaded window and a modern screen wall adjoining to the east return. Windows are set in each gablehead. A window is present to the east return of the lean-to, which is slightly recessed to the right. The lean-to incorporates a door to the left, ventilation holes flanking to the right, and a modern window, enlarged from a former door opening, to the right. A gabled outhouse is adjoined to the right, with a blocked opening to the north.

The window glazing is diamond-pane. The roof features granite ridge stacks and graded grey slates. A storage shed with three doors is built into the slope to the north.
