Description

The Walled Garden at Urr Valley Hotel, formerly known as Ernespie House, consists of a group of mainly later 19th century structures.

The dovecot is primarily from the 19th century but includes earlier materials. It has a circular plan and three stages, featuring later narrow pointed windows and a corbelled crenellated parapet. The structure is made of random rubble with red brick banding and a brick parapet. There is a low entrance on the north side, small lancet windows (some with tile edging), an alighting ledge, flight holes, and a corbelled parapet with coped crenellations. Inside, there are stone nesting boxes.

The water tower, built in the later 19th century, has a squat, square plan and a battered design with a crenellated parapet that conceals the water tank. It is constructed of random sandstone rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings and features rusticated long and short quoins. The south entrance is semicircular-arched with a tapered chamfer to the rusticated quoins and a roll-moulded hoodmould. There are three false arrow-slits on the south and west sides.

The walled garden likely dates to the late 18th century, with later 19th century alterations. It has flat-coped random rubble walls with central doorways on the north, south, and west sides that have been bricked up. The eastern wall has been partly replaced by a low wall and railings to create a concave semicircle.

Surrounding the house to the west, northwest, and southwest are garden terraces and steps. These consist of a series of raised and sunken terraces with flights of stone steps, and decorative urns are placed flanking the steps and at some corners of the terraces.
