Description

Airds Of Kells is a largely complete and unaltered late 18th-century farmhouse. The design is unusual, featuring symmetrical curving walls that connect two flanking pavilions. The house and pavilions all have three-bay facades constructed of painted rubble with raised margins.

The main house has a gabled brick porch centrally positioned, and all windows are sash and case with a four-pane glazing pattern. The symmetrical, curving walls linking the house to the pavilions are constructed of rubble and have coped verges. Each pavilion is three bays wide, two storeys high, and has a hipped roof that ends in a sawn-off gable with a wallhead stack to the north. The pavilion to the left appears to have always been used for domestic purposes, while the pavilion to the right originally contained a byre on the ground floor and storage above. The curving linking walls have a central doorway flanked by small blocked windows or niches. Slate roofs and coped end stacks are found throughout the property.

This is a good and rare example of its type, as the curving linking walls and pavilions have survived intact, features which are typically vulnerable to alteration or demolition. The layout is similar to that at Kelton Mains, although on a larger scale. A single cut stone, likely a fragment of a medieval round-headed bipartite window, lies in the garden to the rear of the house.
