Description
Carsphairn Churchyard features rubble walls and numerous well-crafted gravestones from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The McAdam mausoleum, built in 1838, is a square burial enclosure with rubble walls, bolection moulded eaves band, and flat coping. It has a small central pediment above the entrance, which includes an iron grille gate. An inscription in the tympanum indicates that this is the burial place of the McAdams of Waterhead, ancestors of John Loudon McAdam, the roadmaker. Inside the mausoleum, there is a heraldic panel, likely from the 17th or 18th century, which has been repositioned within a 19th-century architrave, the lintel of which is dated 1838.
