Description
Stoneykirk Old Parish Church, built in 1827 with alterations by John B Wilson in 1901-1902, is a rectangular-plan church featuring a square-plan castellated tower. The church is constructed of whinstone with ashlar dressings. It has gabletted angle buttresses on the east and west elevations, while clasping buttresses divide the bays on the north and south elevations. The pointed arch windows are adorned with Y-tracery.
The east elevation, which serves as the entrance, has three bays and features an advanced three-stage bell tower. The central pointed arch doorway is flanked by a recessed two-leaf timber door and a tripartite leaded trefoil fanlight. A plaque above the entrance states 'Church built AD 1827'. There are flanking windows on the north and south faces at the first stage, with single windows on all faces at the second stage, the eastern window being larger. The third stage has louvred windows, and the tower is crowned with castellation and obelisks topped with foliage ball finials at the corners of the battlement. The recessed flanking bays also have single windows.
The west elevation, or rear, has two bays with a central buttress. The entrances in the center of each bay are blocked at ground level, and single windows flank the buttress. To the left, railings enclose steps leading to the castellated bay.
On the north and south elevations, there are three tall pointed arch windows that light the nave.
The interior was not seen in 1999. The railings consist of a coped low wall and decorative railings that enclose the recessed bays on the east elevation, with an iron gate to the right.
