40 High Street in Gatehouse of Fleet is a pair of late 18th century, two-storey terraced houses featuring typical Gatehouse Venetian window details. The exterior is finished with harled walling and smooth raised margins, and the entire building is likely constructed of brick.

The central doorways are paired and include fanlights and double-leaf doors. Above these doors is a Venetian window with an arched light blind on the party wall. The left bay, which is No 38, has a depressed arch pend with a Venetian window above and flanking lights that are blind. The ground floor of No 38 has a bipartite window with two-pane plate glass. There is a variety of glazing patterns in the other single light windows; No 38 features a first-floor sash and case window with a 12-pane glazing pattern, while No 40 has 8-pane casement windows.

The roofs are slate, and there is a coped brick stack on the left side. The rear elevation is partially harled, and the pend is lined with brick.
