Description
Maxwelltown West Church, located in Laurieknowe, Dumfries, was designed by James Barbour and completed in 1866. This Gothic-style church features a main gable facing the street, adorned with curvilinear tracery in its openings and door tympanum. The nave is flanked by recessed semi-octagonal stair turrets and shallow 2-light transepts. The exterior is constructed with stugged red coursers and polished dressings. The central painted doorway on the main gabled elevation includes nook-shafts and is flanked by circular openings, with an engaged tall, finialled shallow buttress above. There are also two tall windows, pinnacled angle buttresses, and a parapet with cusped detailing, topped by a belfry finial on a solid square base. The roofs are slated and facetted over the stair turrets.
Inside, the church features a gallery with a decorative and stencilled front on three sides, supported by cast-iron columns. An upper tier of columns supports shallow arches below the roof, and there is an arched recess to the apse behind the organ, along with an octagonal pulpit. The ceiling is ribbed and includes angle brackets.
