Description
Old Orchardton is an early 19th-century farmhouse that stands two stories tall and features a three-bay design. To the east, there are two ranges of single-storey and attic rubble byres positioned at right angles, creating two sides of a square courtyard.
The farmhouse is constructed of painted rubble with squared quoins and raised rendered margins. It has a symmetrical three-bay front with single light windows that are sash and case, featuring a 12-pane glazing pattern. The rear elevation is similarly detailed, with some plate glass sashes and a lean-to addition on the ground floor. The roofs are covered with slate, and there are corniced axial stacks, flat skews, and thackstanes.
The steading buildings are constructed at right angles and are all made of rubble. The western range is built on a steeply sloping site and is single-storey, featuring three stable doors that open to the courtyard; the left door is set within a much larger bricked-up opening. To the right is a lower single-storey stable range. The southern range includes a large two-storey barn with a lower byre to the east, which has been significantly altered on the courtyard elevation. All the buildings have good graded slate roofs and sandstone ridges.
