Description

The Craigmillar Arts Centre, located at 58 Newcraighall Road in Edinburgh, is a building designed by John Robertson of Inverness in 1900. It is a Modern Gothic church featuring a rectangular nave and chancel, along with a circular tower, baptistry, and chapel. The structure is made of brick with a cement render that mimics squared and snecked bull-faced masonry, topped with a grey slate roof and terracotta ridging. The windows are roll moulded and pointed arched.

On the north elevation, there is an entrance tower that projects at the northwest angle, featuring an advanced gabled doorpiece with flanking pinnacles and a cruciform finial. The pointed arched doorway has boarded timber doors, and there are windows at the first stage of the tower. The tower is capped with a conical roof that has a scalloped lead cap and a dentilled cornice. A circular baptistry projects to the north of the chancel and has a polygonal roof. The nave is flanked by buttresses.

The west elevation is buttressed and includes an advanced polygonal chapel with a three-light window set in the gable. The east elevation is also buttressed and features a three-light window set in the gable. The south elevation has a regular arrangement of bays.

Inside, the church boasts a decorative open timber roof supported by timber columns that form aisles. The east window is adorned with stained glass, while the other windows predominantly feature clear leaded glass with coloured margins. The moulded cement "masonry" matches the exterior.

The property is complemented by gatepiers topped with ball finials and a low coped boundary wall along the street, which is accompanied by modern railings.
