Description

14 Niddrie Cottages, located on Newcraighall Road in Edinburgh, is a group of five traditional single storey and attic semi-detached and terraced former miners' cottages, designed by Alexander Allan in 1912. The cottages are constructed from local yellow brick, featuring sandstone mullions, curved refractory brick cills, and one harled gabled end. The roofs include gabled bipartite dormers alongside swept-roof dormers, and the windows are topped with segmental arched lintels.

The terraced section to the east consists of four mirrored properties, arranged in a six-bay terrace with paired doors flanked by bipartite windows on each side. Above the bipartite windows, there are gabled dormers. The rear features single storey, piend-roofed projections.

The semi-detached cottages consist of four mirrored pairs, each displaying a five-bay elevation with a single window at the center, doors in the flanking bays, and bipartite windows in the outer bays. Gabled dormers are positioned over the bipartite windows, while swept-roofed dormers sit above the single windows. Each cottage has a rear elevation that includes a two-storey piend-roofed wing and a lean-to single storey projection. Most of the original timber sash and case windows are retained, featuring small-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes, although some upper sashes have been replaced with modern plate glass. The cottages also have panelled doors, some of which are modern, with small-pane fanlights above moulded timber lintels. The grey slate roofs are complemented by timber bargeboards on the dormers, and brick stacks are present on the mutual gables and gable ends.
