Description

1 Cambridge Street in Edinburgh is a four-storey and basement plain classical end of terrace pavilion block designed by John Watherstone in 1859. The building features five bays facing Castle Terrace and five bays facing Cambridge Street. It is constructed of grey ashlar stone, which is channelled at the ground floor and rusticated at the basement. There are dividing bands between the basement and ground floor, as well as between the ground and first floors. A moulded cornice separates the second and third floors, and there is a moulded eaves cornice at the top.

The first-floor windows are set in corniced architraves with panelled aprons, while the second-floor windows are framed by moulded surrounds. The building has a regular pattern of windows. Stone steps and platts cover the basement areas, and there are timber panelled doors with plate glass fanlights in the central bays on both Castle Terrace and Cambridge Street.

The windows include some with 12-pane glazing, while the rest are plate glass in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered with grey slates, and there is a corniced ashlar stack with circular cans at the ridge, as well as a scrolled wallhead stack facing Cambridge Street.

The boundary wall features decorative finials on cast-iron railings set atop a low ashlar wall.
