Description
Burns' Monument, located on Regent Road in Edinburgh, was designed by Thomas Hamilton in 1830. This remarkable Greek Revival structure is a circular, fluted Corinthian temple featuring a two-stage cylindrical cella and a recessed attic storey. It stands on a square-plan ground-storey plinth with corner pedestals. At the top, there is a central carved finial supported by three griffons. The monument is constructed from ashlar sandstone, which is shallow channelled at the base. It includes a base course, a modillioned cornice adorned with antefixae and lion heads, and an attic storey decorated with wreath reliefs and a dentilled cornice.
The first stage of the cella has rectangular window openings, which are now mostly blocked as of 2007, with lyre reliefs positioned above them. There are steps leading to a moulded door surround with a cornice on the south side, featuring a three-panel timber entrance door. The north elevation bears the inscription '1759 ROBERT BURNS 1796'.
Inside, as observed in 2007, there is an internal ring of Doric columns and a round-arched niche on the north wall. The floor is tiled with tesserae.
Surrounding the monument is a semi-circular rubble boundary wall to the south, along with cast-iron spearheaded railings to the north, west, and east, which feature curved iron supports and a gate on the north side.
