St Margaret Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 83-85 Boswell Parkway, Edinburgh

St Margaret Mary's Roman Catholic Church, built in 1938 by Reginald Fairlie, originally served as a church hall. The building is cruciform in plan, with a six-bay aisled nave, and includes a single-story, flat-roofed entrance vestibule to the south, flanked by short, projecting wings. The design incorporates Cape Dutch styling with modernist details.

The exterior is primarily brick, rendered and painted white above window sill level, with brick and stone dressings. A brick base course and brick band course are present at window sill level to the aisles. Stone coping defines the gable ends, and a parapet tops the flat-roofed section. The top of the nave roof is flattened behind the gables and features six regularly spaced circular windows.

The south elevation (entrance front) is symmetrical, with a central projecting vestibule spanning the width of the nave, flanked by short, gable-ended wings of the same height. The flat roof of the vestibule and wings is concealed behind a coped parapet. Recessed entrances, framed by brick architraves, are set within the projecting central section of the vestibule, flanked by narrow windows. Further windows are recessed within the wings. A Cape Dutch style gable is punctuated by a circular window, enclosed by a brick surround and surmounted by a stone cross on the south side of the nave.

The east and west side elevations each feature five windows to the main body of the nave. The eastern wing has a central window flanked by narrower windows, while the western wing has been altered, with one remaining narrow window and the incorporation of a round-arched window; a wrought-iron fixture is fixed to the left of that window. A northern entrance to the nave is marked by plain brick flanking pilasters and a stone lintel, featuring an ashlar cornice that projects outwards above. Access is provided by a boarded timber door, alongside two windows. Three gabled, louvred vents are present in the roof. The north elevation retains six windows, some of which are partially blocked.

Throughout the building, square-paned timber casement windows are used. The roof is covered in grey slate, and a single coped chimney is visible in the northeast corner of the kitchen. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted.

Inside, the open roof is supported by five timber scissor trusses, which rest on steel stanchions and are lit by seven circular roof lights. Lower aisle roofs are supported on a covered steel framework and separated from the nave by two pillars on each side. A circular arched entrance leads to the chancel at the north end. Stained glass depicting coats of arms of saints is set along the top row of lights in the aisle windows. The circular window to the south depicts Jesus appearing to Margaret Mary, and the round-arched window in the southwest corner chapel shows the baptism of Christ. A series of murals by Felix McCulloch, dating from the 1950s, depict scenes from the life of Christ along the frieze above the aisles. An altarpiece on the south wall portrays Jesus and his suffering revealed to Margaret Mary.
