Description

Granton Congregational Church, built in 1937 by Frank F MacDonald, is a rectangular church with a canted apse and lower height aisles, designed in a simplified Gothic style. The exterior features foiled and pointed-arched windows, along with buttresses, constructed from coursed stugged synthetic ashlar with polished synthetic ashlar dressings. Notable elements include a projecting stone base course, stone sills for the windows, and stone coping on the gables.

On the south elevation, there are stone steps leading up to paired Tudor-arched entrances, each with two-leaf boarded timber doors fitted with strap hinges. Above the doors is a moulded cornice with a carved quatrefoil panel, adjacent to a large traceried window that has a hoodmould. The flanking gableted buttresses feature single foil mouldings, and there are foil-headed windows on each side with lancets above them, along with a narrow light in the gable. At the apex, there is a stone cross designed in a Celtic style.

The east and west elevations each have eight bays along the nave, with all but the southernmost bay featuring paired Tudor-arched clerestory windows. The aisles below have a lean-to roof that slopes to the south and includes a single foil-headed window. Each aisle has seven buttresses, with Tudor-arched windows situated between them, except for the two northernmost bays on the east elevation. The northernmost bay contains a Tudor-arched entrance, with a ramp added to the south.

The north elevation showcases a pentagonal apse with a buttress at each corner and lancet windows on the central and flanking sides. The church features fixed multi-pane leaded windows, some of which include stained glass panes in the traceried south window. The roofs are covered with slate, and there is a small ventilator with a pavilion roof at the center of the nave, along with block skewputts. The interior has not been inspected since 1997.
